In Regensburg, the Danube's course is diverted by the hard rock of the Bohemian Massif. With the fertile plains of the Gäuboden to the right and the foothills of the Bavarian Forest to the left, the river finds its way southeast. There is now lively shipping traffic on the Danube. Your journey takes you to Straubing, which has been considered the heart of the Gäuboden since Roman times. The river meanders through the wide plains until it is embraced by the millions of years old low mountain ranges in Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. At the end of the Danube Cycle Path, you will be greeted by the "Venice of the North," as the three-river city of Passau is often called. The city has a lot to offer, including the cathedral, the Catholic University, the town hall, the fortress, the beautiful baroque old town, and much more.
You'll mostly be on quiet roads and bike paths from Regensburg to Passau. Only very rarely will you have to detour onto busy roads on this final stretch.
