Jura trail - Roman meander

In the footsteps of the Romans between Abens and Danube

From Bad Gögging, hike through a pretty pasture and meadow landscape. Crossing a sulphurous stream and past a small chapel, the trail soon continues parallel to the Abens River. For approximately 1,5 km, the trail runs along the flood embankment. On natural paths, you reach the Roman fort Abusina, which marked the eastern ridge of the Limes in Roman times. Eining, with its church visible from afar, awaits you with a wonderful beer garden on the Danube. After another kilometer along the Danube, the trail climbs gently to Sandberg, home to the remains of a Roman legionary camp. Extensive dry slopes dominate the landscape, which further into Bad Gögging is once again dominated by the typical hop gardens. Before the trail returns through the town to the Abens Bridge, a visit to the Romanesque St. Andrew's Church in the old town center, with its impressive Roman Bath Museum, is recommended.

Tip: A good one-and-a-half-hour detour is to hike to Hadrian's Column and the Roman Limes on the other side of the Danube. Take the historic cable ferry in Eining and continue north on the Danube loop along the Jurasteig trail.
