20 The Gaißa valley in Passau

Start Passau

The tour starts at Passau's main train station, following the Danube Cycle Path upstream past the impressive Kachlet hydroelectric power plant towards Vilshofen. You'll reach the small Gaißa River , which you follow uphill through the idyllic "Gaißatal" nature reserve. Well-maintained forest roads lead through the wooded area around the Dachsberg hill. Above the Danube slopes, the route levels out to the Oberhaus Fortress. As one of the largest preserved castle complexes in Europe, it towers over the city and is not only a magnificent cultural monument but also houses several museums and an observation tower offering a 360-degree panoramic view from the roof. A unique and fascinating spectacle of nature and color can be admired from the fortress: at the confluence of the three rivers , the blue-brown Danube, the green Inn, and the black Ilz merge and flow together as the Danube. The return journey follows Rennweg, with a view to the right of the impressive remains of Hals Castle (privately owned), a once mighty count's castle that rises on a steep rocky ridge above the Ilz River in the Hals district. The tour then descends via Neue Rieser Straße towards the city center. A short stop at the "Schönblick Curve" (parking area) rewards you with a magnificent view of Passau's old town, just waiting to be explored.
