The starting and finishing point is the Wittelsbach town of Kelheim with its Liberation Hall. The first leg leads along the Main-Danube Canal into the Altmühl Valley, passing Essing with the Randeck Castle ruins, Prunn Castle, and the sites of the Altmühl Valley Archaeological Park. In the three-castle town of Riedenburg, you can take a break with a birds of prey flight show at Rosenburg Castle. Following an old railway line, you leave the Altmühl Valley and continue through the Hienheim Forest back into the Danube Valley . Near Hienheim, you first cross the Limes, the former border of the Roman Empire, and then the Danube by cable ferry . In Eining, a visit to the Roman fort of Abusina is worthwhile. The route continues to Weltenburg Abbey, idyllically situated in the "Weltenburg Gorge," Bavaria's first National Natural Monument. With its Baroque Asam Church, the world's oldest monastic brewery, and the abbey tavern, spiritual contemplation and culinary delights combine here. For the final leg to Kelheim, you can either climb the Weltenburg hill on the Danube cycle path or marvel at the impressive Danube gorge from the deck of an excursion boat.
