0 Danub source region: Route Zero Danube cycle path

Start Donaueschingen

Starting in Donaueschingen, the tour follows the two source rivers, the Brigach and the Breg , through the scenically beautiful and culturally diverse region. Crossing the Baar plateau, the route leads through the Brigach Valley to Villingen, where a detour to the historic town center is worthwhile. The tour continues through the Groppertal valley to St. Georgen, past the monastery pond to the source of the Brigach. Here begins the more challenging part of the tour: typical of the region, several climbs must be conquered across the Black Forest hills, and technically demanding sections on difficult terrain must be tackled before reaching the source of the Breg. The final climb to the Brend rewards the effort with fantastic views of the Black Forest hills and as far as the Swiss Alps. The descent then leads to Furtwangen , where a visit to the German Clock Museum is recommended. Cycling leisurely downstream through the Breg Valley, you reach Vöhrenbach; a side trip leads to the impressive Linach Dam. Back on the main Danube Cycle Path, the route continues to Bräunlingen, with its charming old town, and past the Roman bath ruins to Hüfingen. The final highlights are the Danube spring and its source in Donaueschingen, where the two source rivers, Brigach and Breg, merge to form the young Danube.
