The New Castle is one of the most outstanding examples of late medieval secular architecture in Bavaria . Construction began in 1418 during the reign of Duke Ludwig the Bearded, initially as the residence of the Dukes of Bavaria-Ingolstadt. However, the complex was not only a residence and seat of government, but also an integral part of the city's defenses. Today, the New Castle houses the Bavarian Army Museum.
