The parish church served as the second cathedral church of the Diocese of Augsburg during the prince-bishopric's residence period (14th-18th centuries). The tower's octagonal top was designed by David Motzard, the great-great-grandfather of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In 1979, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to a minor basilica.
